Professor of Late Antique Latin Literature and Thought, University of Toronto

The Department of Classics and the Centre for Medieval Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Late Antique Latin Literature and Thought – broadly conceived. This will be a joint appointment between the Department of Classics (75%) and the Centre for Medieval Studies (25%). The appointment will be at the rank of Professor, beginning July 1, 2025, or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will be eligible for the Jackman Professorship in the Humanities for a five-year term, which will be renewable following a favourable review.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Classics, Medieval Studies, or a related area, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing departmental strengths in Classics and Medieval Studies. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in Latin literature and thought in the original and in translation at all levels, and to contribute to our thriving undergraduate and graduate programs in Classics and Late Antiquity. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive and externally funded research program. We particularly welcome applicants whose scholarship expands the boundaries of the field of Late Antique Latin studies through innovative methodology and / or cutting-edge work in the study of the premodern world(s).
