Assistant Professor of New Testament, Santa Clara University Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, CA

The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (JST-SCU) is conducting a search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of New Testament. The position will begin on August 1, 2025.

We welcome applications from excellent scholars across the field of New Testament studies. Pauline and Johannine literatures are particular areas of interest. In addition to demonstrating firm grounding in historical-critical methods and the ability to teach Greek at all levels, the successful candidate will be conversant in a range of approaches rooted in critical theory and cultural studies. The successful candidate will exhibit a commitment to doing theology in global, intercultural, and interdisciplinary contexts. We encourage applications from scholars whose work substantively engages ecological justice, lived religion, or material culture. The successful candidate will demonstrate a history of success as a teaching scholar and will understand and support the school’s Jesuit and Ignatian mission. Ability to teach and supervise in French and/or Spanish is a positive consideration.

The successful candidate will:
● Teach four graduate courses per year on the semester system, including master’s-level foundation courses in New Testament and advanced seminars for doctoral and advanced master’s students. The successful candidate will offer a range of courses that serve JST-SCU’s and GTU’s extraordinarily diverse student body and program needs.
● Direct and contribute to comprehensive exam, thesis, and dissertation committees.
● Develop a research agenda that consistently generates excellent peer-reviewed publications.
● Provide service to the school, university, and GTU as appropriate to rank.
● Have, or be willing to develop, expertise in rigorous and engaging online education.

Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. or equivalent degree or ABD (all but dissertation) in New Testament studies (or closely related field) required by the appointment start date of August 1, 2025.
2. Evidence of a strong agenda for scholarship and promise of excellent peer-reviewed publications in the area of expertise.
3. Evidence of effective and excellent teaching. Experience mentoring or directing graduate work is desirable.
